Parking disc (P-disc) – rules and use

Parking discs are required on time-limited spaces marked with the supplementary sign demanding a P-disc. Setting it correctly is key to avoiding a fine, especially in city centres and resident zones with frequent inspections.

Parking disc overview

When is a parking disc required?

Sign/noticeMeaningAction
Supplementary sign 831 “Parking disc”P-disc mandatorySet the disc when you arrive
Time/day (e.g. Mon–Fri 08–18)Applies only during listed periodsUse the disc only within these hours
Maximum time (e.g. max 2 h)Time limit from arrivalLeave before the limit runs out
See Supplementary signs for a full explanation.

How to set the P-disc

  1. Turn the pointer to the nearest quarter hour after arrival
  2. Place the disc clearly visible behind the windscreen
  3. Note your latest departure time from the maximum stay
  4. Move the car before the limit expires – resetting the disc without moving still counts as the same stay

Digital tools and combining with apps

SituationP-discApp paymentComment
Free bay with time limitRequiredNot neededEnforcement is based on the disc
Paid bay without supplementary signNot requiredRequiredOnly the app/ticket matters
Paid bay stating “P-disc 3 h free”RequiredOptional after the free periodUse the disc first, app for extra time
Resident parking with time limitRequired if the sign says soDepends on local schemeSee City driving: stopping and parking for details
Digital parking services record start and stop times but do not replace a disc when the sign requires one. In tight city areas it helps to combine an app reminder with the disc to stay within the limit, as described in Advanced parking .

Exceptions and special permits

  • Disabled parking permits: A valid blue badge gives exemptions where the sign states “Except with valid disabled permit”. Learn more in Parking rules .
  • EV incentives: Municipalities may offer free parking to EVs, yet disc requirements can still apply. See EV benefits and rules .
  • Resident permits: Some cities let residents park beyond the limit with a permit. Display the permit alongside the disc when the sign demands it.

Enforcement and sanctions

Practical tips

  • Use a reliable disc with a clear scale
  • Set a phone reminder to avoid overtime
  • Read the supplementary signs for times and exemptions
  • Position the disc so it stays put when you close the door
  • Keep a spare disc handy when swapping or renting cars
