Driving test step by step – what to expect on test day

Driving-test stages

The driving test proves that you handle the car safely and independently. The examiner looks at planning, risk management, cooperation and rule knowledge. Use this guide to stay in control from start to finish.

Final preparation

  • Check the car: lights, reflective vest and warning triangle; see Vehicle safety check
  • Bring your learner permit and ID, and keep them ready at the test centre
  • Review the technical questions and practise demonstrating them calmly

Arrival and documents

  • Arrive 15 minutes early at the test office or the agreed meeting point

During the drive

  1. Ease into motion after establishing full control of mirrors and seating
  2. Scan far ahead, use mirrors frequently and confirm junctions with head checks
  3. Maintain steady speed, choose the right gear and apply engine braking; see Gear use and revs
  4. Signal intentions early with indicators and lane position, coordinating with other road users
  5. Judge risk continuously: protect vulnerable users and handle roundabouts with confidence

After the test

  • The examiner summarises immediately; take notes and ask for concrete examples
