Sun glare and low sun β techniques for better visibility
Low sun can cause strong sun glare and reduced visibility. With proper preparation and technique, you can maintain safe visibility and avoid dangerous situations.
Preparations before driving
- Clean the windshield inside and out; grease film intensifies glare.
- Adjust mirrors and seating position, see Seating position and mirrors .
- Check wipers and washer fluid, see Windshield wipers and washers .
Quick measures while driving
- Use the sun visor and, if needed, sunglasses.
- Lower the seat a notch if possible to lift the sun edge above the windshield frame.
- Reduce speed and increase distance. See Speed and distance .
- Increase airflow toward the windshield and activate AC to prevent fogging. Read Defogging and visibility .
Light use and visibility
- Use low beam even in daylight when visibility drops.
- Turn on taillights if the car does not activate them automatically.
- Avoid high beam in dust, haze and fog. See Use of lights and signals .
Intersections and crosswalks
- Watch for vulnerable road users hidden in sun shadows.
- Make firm stops and double-check sideways before rolling.
- Communicate with eye contact or short gestures when needed, see Communication with other road users .
Measures by situation
| Situation | Measures |
|---|---|
| Low sun straight ahead | Sun visor down, reduce speed, increase distance |
| Sun from the side | Angle sun visor, adjust seating position, double side check |
| Dirty window glares | Spray and wipe, reduce speed until clear visibility |
| Fog in backlight | AC on, max windshield air, high fan |
