Driving in the dark
Driving in the dark increases risk due to reduced visibility, glare and limited contrast. Use correct lights, adapt speed and expand margins.
Core principles
- Use low beam by default; switch to high beam when no one is dazzled
- Reduce speed; stopping distance must fit your visible range
- Keep longer following distances and scan more actively
- Clean windows, mirrors and lights for maximum clarity
Light use
See Use of lights and signals . Always dip for oncoming and when following closely. Use fog lights only in fog, snow or heavy rain.
